How Does Philz Make Their Coffee?

Philz Coffee is a Bay Area coffee roaster and retailer founded in 2003. The company has 31 locations, most of which are in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company’s founder, Phil Jaber, started roasting coffee beans in his garage in 1986.

He opened his first retail location in 1994. The company’s name comes from Jaber’s nickname, “Phil the Arab.” Jaber roast each batch of coffee beans to order using a Diedrich IR-12 infrared drum roaster.

The roasted beans are then ground and brewed using the pour-over method. Pour-over brewing involves pouring hot water over coarsely ground coffee beans that have been placed in a filter cone or Chemex brewer. The water drips through the grounds and into a carafe or mug below.

This method allows for a more even extraction of flavor compounds from the beans than other methods like drip brewing. Philz Coffee uses an exclusive blend of Ethiopian, Brazilian and Costa Rican coffees roasted to perfection that they say results in a cup of coffee with “no bitter aftertaste.” Their brews are also noted for being less acidic than many other types of coffee.
